PG SILESIA standpoint concerning planned construction of S1 express road

06.05.2013

The options of planned S1 express road (A, B, C, D), passing through the mining areas, harm the economic interests of the mines .

Therefore PG SILESIA does not agree with any of the road options, proposed by GDDKiA (National Directorate of National Roads and Motorways). PG SILESIA is expecting proposals with alternative road options that would not interfere with the development objectives of the mines, which excavation areas are located within planned investment area.

Among proposed options, the most invasive for PG SILESIA is option A. Selection of mentioned option would harm economic and business interests of the company and reduce possibility of mine development. This would directly mean the employment instability of 1600 employees who are the mine's pillar.

PG SILESIA is a private mine, where some of the employees are, at the same time, its co-owners This makes us one of very few such companies in the mining industry in Poland. In the past two years our employees, management and social partners have taken a number of measures, including investments, in order to restore the profitability of the mine.

Actions, led so far by the Board of PG SILESIA, were focused on gradual development of the company. For the first year and a half, the value of investments exceeded 500 million Polish zlotys. Using rich experience and tradition we aim to become the most modern coal mine in Poland. Innovative mining machines and modern technologies, used for seam's excavation, are not enough to make this happen. We also need people who will be able to use them. That is why we make every effort to ensure that our employees have the opportunity of continuous development and improvement of their competences. We make sure that our employees can work in safe and healthy working conditions. We also take care of future generations by choosing eco-friendly technologies. That is why we are disappointed by the fact that companies, like ours, are exposed to unstable development conditions, which unable long-term business planning. Such actions also weaken the attractiveness of the region, as a place for future investment.

PG SILESIA mining area amounts to 21.36 km2, with the balance resources of 503 million tonnes and industrial resources of 127 million tonnes. Chosing option - A, with currently technical solutions proposed by GDDKiA (National Directorate of National Roads and Motorways), would reduce the production of millions of tons of coal from the active mining area called "Czechowice II". It would also restrict access to millions of tons of coal from the rich geological resources, where exploitation is planned in the next decades.
New investments are ahead of PG SILESIA. At the end of this year we will have two modern longwalls operating, new bunker for output, refurbished shafts and innovative, environmentally friendly coal enrichment technology.

By generating a huge loss of resources, construction S1 express road according to option A, would slow down investments and growth of PG SILESIA. Undeniable moral, social and economic losses of its employees, clients and local business partners should also be emphasized.
