PG SILESIA restarts hard coal extraction

In April 2012 PG SILESIA – company operating in sector of hard coal extraction – restarted extraction of coal in Czechowice-Dziedzice. On 7th of May Treatment Plant was also put into operation. Currently some tests of machines , devices and systems included in extraction’s infrastructure, are being conducted. PG SILESIA is planning extraction of material, of high quality, at the level of approximately 3 million tons gross per year. Extracted coal will be destined both for energetic sector and for retail sales.

PG SILESIA – owned by Czech group Energetický a průmyslový holding a.s. (EPH) – took over „Silesia” mine in December 2010. From the moment of acquisition the investor has made a lot significant changes, which main aim was modernization of the mine and increasing safety and miners’ working comfort. From 2010 total amount of money, spent for modernization of mine, has amounted to Euro 108 million. Process of implementation of next investments, including shaft modernization (completion is scheduled for second half of 2013), is pending. Moreover, tenders for building of underground bunker and deliver second longwall equipment were announced. PG SILESIA is also planning works connected with revitalization of former mining area.

Our priority is to operate in accordance with the highest safety standards. Because of this, starting from taking over the mine in December 2010, we have invested constantly in modern solutions. Multi-million investments, we implemented at the beginning of 2011, were connected mainly with modernization of the mine and preparatory works for first longwall. We have invested in equipment of high quality, delivered by renowned producers. Such equipment will help us to achieve planned efficiency of extraction. Currently we are planning to produce approximately 5 thousand tons of coal per day, and in Autumn next year we are planning to achieve the level of 10 thousand tons per day. Our target is to achieve the production level of 3 million tons gross per year. – said Jiři Paštika, General Director and Chairman of the Board of PG SILESIA.

On 19th of April 2012 Director of Mining Authority, headquartered in Katowice, issued a decision where he had allowed longwall 160, in seam 315 and 314/2 Eastern Part of “Silesia” Mine, to be operated.

Our goal is to transform „Silesia” Mine into profitable company which uses modern technologies. From the date of taking over the mine we have implemented many significant investments – for example modern equipment. Moreover, we have modernized Treatment Plant, we have renovated an office building and we have cleaned up surrounding infrastructure. We are planning next investments. We believe that we can become significant company in mining sector in Poland and gain leading position when it comes to efficiency and work safety. – said Thoralf Klehm, Vice chairman of the Board for Operations.

In February 2012 PG SILESIA established continuous cooperation with Politechnika Śląska in areas of research, education and personnel. The cooperation refers to education of PG SILESIA’s employees at universities studies, PhD studies, post-graduated studies, agreeing the topics of research and MA works, presenting and promotion of achievements, and also organizing regular trainings and specialized courses. Important aspect of concluded Agreement is cooperation in hiring Politechnika Śląska’s graduates, organizing trainings for students and promotion, among the students, current staffing needs of PG SILESIA.
